Testing Information

Students in grades 7 and 8 take ISTEP+ tests every spring. The applied skills portion (written responses/essays) of the exam is usually given the first week of March, while the multiple-choice portion is typically given the last week of April. Testing for each portion takes place over a three or four-day period. Students typically test for one or two hours each day. Students are tested in the content areas of math and English, but exams may encompass science or social studies, as well.

Parents are asked to avoid scheduling doctor and dentist appointments during ISTEP+ testing. Students are encouraged to do their very best on these exams, as we gain information about the skills they need to learn, as well as skills they have mastered. Additionally, test scores help to determine rankings for schools and monetary awards from the State.

Graduation Exams

All students graduating after 2011 must pass end-of-course assessments in algebra and English 10. (These exams have replaced the Graduation Qualifying Exam portion of ISTEP+ that students previously took in grade 10.) Students take these state-mandated exams in May, at the completion of the courses. Passing both exams is required in order to receive a diploma. While nearly all students are enrolled in English 10 as sophomores and will take the corresponding test at that point, students may take the algebra assessment in any grade - whenever they complete the course. For some students, this may be as early as the eighth grade.

Students not receiving a passing score on a test will be offered remediation in the specific subject area prior to retesting. Students repeat testing until a passing score is obtained. At this point, a waiver has not been put into place by the State for students who do not pass one or both tests.
